Glass remains a popular building material. According to U.S. Glass Magazine, building segments that utilize a high volume of glass continue to see a lot of construction spending. Of course, not all glass is the same. The use of bullet-resistant glass remains popular, but not everyone knows how to properly maintain this material. Here are a few tips to help you maintain yours.
One of the most surprising tips for owners of bullet-resistant glass is to avoid using paper towels when you clean or dust your barrier. In fact, paper towels should never come close to your glass barrier as they can cause scratches and other damage. A soft cloth or chamois is the right tool for the job. Natural sponges are another good choice.
There are a number of corrosive solvents that shouldn't be used to clean your barrier. Don't use any cleaners that have an aroma since those chemicals can degrade your glass barrier. Mild detergents and soaps mixed with warm water are the best bet. After any cleaning, be sure that the surface is fully rinsed to keep soap scum from forming. As counter-intuitive as it might seem, you'll also want to avoid any type of glass cleaner or household cleaner that contains bleach or abrasive chemicals. Treat your barrier with care, and you'll avoid scratches, fogginess, and other problems.
Unfortunately, your glass barrier won't last forever and will need to be replaced at some point. It's possible to remove some scratches and dings, but once fog or condensation appears between the glass panes, there's little that can be done. If hand polishing is no longer effective in removing minor scratches, you can call your installer to see if they can help with a repair. In most instances, it's much easier to replace a glass barrier than to repair it. Following these tips can help extend the life of your barrier and keep you and your staff safe.
